This Thursday (5th November) SIB will be hosting a get together for a chill out night, ahead of our next big speaker Fil Mercer-Adams on the 19th November with the return of the Start-Up Cafe’s famous curry.

We will be meeting upstairs in Browns at 6pm, for a few drinks, a few laughs and general good time. In the future we will be following on to clubs after these socials.

SIB Curry Relaunch

This week we are relaunching the students in business society, with great guest speakers, amazing curry and lots of new friends. As usual this event is free to all SIB members, staff and alumni.

If you are interested in starting a business, studying business, on  any of the enterprise modules or on the enterprise scholarship you need to be there.

Limited spaces remaining for 2009/10 BA in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship

Coventry University still have places available on their Enterprise and Entrepreneurship degree starting in October 2009, but places are going fast!

The BA/BSc Enterprise and Entrepreneurship degree provides students with a unique opportunity to combine priceless experience of running a business with specialist knowledge. If you want to be your own boss, develop your ideas into a profitable business or simply want to learn about running a company this is the course for you! On this course you will gain practical experience of setting up and running your own company while being able to develop your knowledge and skills in a specialist area of your choice related to the business you wish to run. Through the three years of the degree, the focus will progressively move from knowledge needed to set up a company, to practical aspects (e.g. registering your business, protecting your intellectual property etc.) and professional advice on how to manage a business – essential for your company’s day to day operations. The course embraces the concept of ‘learning by doing’ and you are guaranteed to have an amazing experience in a stimulating environment!

BusinessZone.co.uk Grant Watch: A guide to small business funding

Looking for new business finance? You may not know it but there is lots of free money out there! A range of small business grant schemes, awards and other initiatives are available to entrepreneurs looking to start and grow their company:

  • time4change is offering Train 2 Gain funding for leadership and management training to business owners based in London, with a workforce of between 9 and 250 employees, volunteers or associates. Train 2 Gain will provide funding where the first £500 is 100% reclaimable. Thereafter, you can spend up to another £1,000 and reclaim £500. More details.
  • Innovative London-based small businesses are being offered R&D grants of up to £10,000 as part of the London Development Agency’s Knowledge Connect scheme. The initiative aims to put SMEs in touch with universities, further education colleges and private sector specialists to develop new business opportunities. More details.
  • The South East Development Agency is offering entrepreneurs based in Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes the chance to win £20,000 in the 2009 Kent Innovation Challenge. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to pitch to a panel of experts during a special event on 2 April. Deadline: 20/02/2009. More details.
  • The Daily Mail and Make Your Mark are encouraging entrepreneurs under 30 to enter the Enterprising Young Brits Awards for the chance to win £1,000 in each of five categories: business entrepreneur, social and community, teen, creative and going global. Deadline: 27/02/2009. More details.
  • The European Commission is offering cash prizes totalling €6,000 in its European Entrepreneurship Video Award. The Commission is seeking creative vides of between one and three minutes on the following topics: entrepreneurial spirit, innovative entrepreneurship and responsible entrepreneurship. Deadline: 31/02/2009. More details.
  • Barclays is offering cash prizes totalling £17,500 to the UK’s most enterprising family businessses in its Family Affair competition. Eight regional winners will win £1,500 and the chance to compete for the overall prize of £5,500. Deadline: 31/02/2009. More details.
  • The Crisis Changing Lives Awards is offering grants of up to £2500 for single homeless people or for those who have experienced homelessness in the past five years to find a work-related course or fund tools or equipment to carry out a job or become self-employed. Deadline: 13/03/2009. More details.
  • Lancaster City Council is offering local businesses grants towards the cost of renting premises. Finance to cover 50% of the first year’s basic rent can be claimed. The maximum grant is normally £2,500 but this may increase to £5,000 if rapid expansion and significant jobs growth is projected, requiring larger scale premises. Deadline: 31/03/2009. More details.
  • The Welsh Assemby has created a new £4.5m fund to help sub post offices in Wales to improve and diversify during the economic crisis. The money can be used for areas including business and marketing advice, advertising, training, improved security and upgrading computer equipment. Applications can be up to £20,000 capital funding and £15,000 in revenue costs. Deadline: 30/04/2009. More details.
  • Dell is seeking entries for its 2009 Small Business Excellence Award. Entrants have the chance to win £25,000 in Dell solutions and a meeting with company founder Michael Dell. The UK winner will receive £15,000 in Dell products and services; a day of best-practice sharing with Dell executives, including Michael Dell, and a 10 year membership to an Accredited Chamber of Commerce. Deadline: 03/04/2009. More details.
  • Winweb is offering £10,000 to new and existing entrepreneurs in its Business ’09 competition. Deadline: 01/10/2009. More details.
